OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE ARM FORCES OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU.
TITLE: ABDUCTION AND KILLINGS OF NIGERIANS: WE DEMAND DECISIVE ACTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY.
Your Excellency,
The Northern Youth Assembly (NYA) writes you at this critical and tragic moment of national distress with deep pain, sorrow, and a sense of humility.
Mr. President, recent developments on the security subsector in Nigeria describes the country that, is under siege due to continued killing, maiming, and destruction of lives and livelihood by bandits and terrorists across the country, especially in the North. The events of the past few days have shaken if not shattered the hope and confidence of citizens, especially young people in the North, in the willingness and capacity of government to protect its people.
Your Excellency, the Killing of Vice Principal Malam Hassan Yakubu Makuku and kidnapping of innocent school students in Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School Maga located at Danko/Wasagu LGA Kebbi State by armed bandits, coming at a time when families are still battling with the trauma, psychological torture and scars of previous abductions, has once again exposed the fragility and weakness of security architect within our region. These children left their homes with the hope of returning home with knowledge and a better future, yet they fell victims to the growing criminality weakness of the Government of the day that, has turned northern Nigeria into a blood hunting ground for terrorists and bandits. Their parents are crying, Communities are fearful, and the entire North is grieving and bleeding.
As if this tragedy was not enough, the brutal and senseless murder of Brigadier General M. Uba by ISWAP has further deepened our sorrow and pain.
Your Excellency, we begin to loose hope in nations security system under your watch.
A gallant officer who dedicated his life to defending his nation was ambushed and killed in the line of duty. This is not just an attack on the military it is an attack on the sovereignty of Nigeria and an open challenge to the authority of the Commander-in-Chief.
Your Excellency, moments like this demand strong leadership, clear communication, and decisive action yet, Nigerians, especially the Northern youths, are deeply concerned that, the Presidency has not made a firm and reassuring public statement on these grievous incidents. Silence in times of national pain creates fear, deepens anxiety, and sends the wrong signal to enemies of the state while citizens wallow in despair, confusion, and disbelief.
The Northern Youth Assembly, therefore urge you to as matter of urgency and national emergency to strongly:
- To address the nation immediately on the kidnapping of Kebbi students abduction and the murder of Brig Gen M. Uba and Malam Hassan Yakubu Makuku to reassure citizens that Nigeria has not fallen, neither surrendered to terrorists.
- Direct full-scale joint security action to rescue the abducted school children within the ultimatum of THREE DAY and ensure that, no single child is left in captivity or victimised.
- Order an intensive, intelligence-driven offensive against ISWAP, bandits, and all terrorist networks threatening the peace sovereignty and stability of northern Nigeria, which poses an existential threat to the country.
- Strengthen community-based security structures and engage local stakeholders who have been neglected in recent security consultations, which in our estimation leads to the recent surge and escalation of insecurity in our region.
- Demonstrate political will by ensuring that, no security failure or breach goes unpunished and no commander abandons his duty without accountability.
Your Excellency, we remind you that the primary responsibility of any responsible government is the protection of lives and property of the citizens. The Northern youths who have remained patient and patriotic despite endless provocations, needs assurance not in private meetings but in a clear national broadcast. While reminding Your Excellency that, you need our VOTES come 2027.
Mr. President, this is the time to rise above politics, above silence, and above hesitation. This is the time to speak, act, and restore confidence in the minds of Nigerians by leadership with example. The blood of our children and our soldiers must not be in vain it must be accounted for.
We expect urgent action.
We demand a firm statement.
And we pray for the safe return of our abducted children in three days to come and for eternal rest for Malam Hassan Yakubu Makuku and Brig Gen M. Uba, fallen heroes of the Nigerian state.
